Using DIN 5480 splines
Reading the designation
DIN 5480 – W 88 × 4 × 20 × 9e is a shaft (W) with reference diameter 88 mm, module 4 and 20 teeth, accuracy grade 9 and deviation series e. N marks the hub.
Grade and series
The accuracy grade sets the size of the tooth thickness and space width tolerance. The deviation series sets where that tolerance sits, and so how much backlash the fit has.
Actual and effective
Actual limits are what you measure on a single tooth or space. Effective limits include the pitch, profile and lead errors, so they decide whether shaft and hub assemble. Check effective with a gauge.
